Research area
My research focuses on the impolite behaviour within the framework of sociopragmatics, especially in intercultural context. During my research, I also consider the sociopragmatic relevance of the notion of face, introduced by Erving Goffman (1955), which has made an enormous influence on both politeness and impoliteness research. I am currently investigating (im)politeness in context of diplomacy, considering the general rules of protocol to be followed (or even ignored) by state officials in relations with foreign partners. The aim of my dissertation is to show how violations of values of group identity (national face) can cause serious diplomatic conflict between the groups concerned.
