Research area
My research focuses on nonverbal communication. I have undertaken to study gestures as the existence of them, or the lack of the same, might contribute to the acquisition of language. Understanding how nonverbal gestures work is not only important for linguists. This research deals with issues of obvious social significance: there is a great number of handicapped individuals whose communication disorders might be improved. Most of these individuals in Hungary are unable to use one modality to compensate for the limitations of another. Gesture research falls into the category of basic research and has many practical applications as well. As basic research it provides relevant information for fields like psycholinguistics, linguistics or cognitive pragmatics, but its results can be important for clinical linguistics, clinical pragmatics, speech therapy or rehabilitation too.
